One of Nellie Jackson’s Girls contacted the saloon recently. She told us, “I am 69 now and was one of Nellie's girls in the early 60's. I loved her, I got sober in 1969 and have stayed sober over 38 years but I remember Nellie's as a fond fun time where I felt safe to be working.”
This “Nellie Girl” sent the saloon a short story you may be interested in reading.
=============================================
“A friend in Houston, TX ask me to go with her to Nellie's, which was in Natchez, MS and she told me she had two men that would give us a ride there.
“I was separated from my husband and children at the time and doing lots of drinking.
“The men I had never met before told us Nellie had a trunk full of money and if we would let them in the house they would give us a ride. I never saw them after they dropped us off in Natchez.
“Nellie fed us and she was a great cook. She set us up together in a room upstairs in the back house where we stayed when we were not working or out in town somewhere.
“I was to use the front bedroom that faces the street next to the front door that was never used when I was there.
“After I had been there awhile one of the other girls told us that a girl had been killed in that room. Seems some mental patient had come to the house and while he was with the girl he killed her and cut her head off. Don't know if that was true or can be verified. However, I tried to see if there was a dark blood spot under the bed like they told me but I can't remember if it was there or not.
“At the time I was there my friend and I were the only white girls working for Nellie."
